Heather (pictured above, center, with Jackie and Mike from the 2019 ADAW Crawford County Alzheimer’s Walk) serves as the DOS for Crawford, Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties.
She brings many positive attributes to the ADAW, but one word describes her perfectly: dedicated.
A member of the ADAW since May 2018, Heather says she has dedicated her life to take care of others. A nurse with 17 years experience, Heather provides support, education, structure, and resources to families and individuals who live with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Her professional experience is comprehensive, but Heather has experienced the first-hand effects of the disease in her own family also.
“I have worked with families along their caregiving journey,” Heather said. “Personally, I have watched my family go through this when my grandfather was diagnosed.”
This personal experience led her along a career path that enabled her to help people navigate the Alzheimer’s and dementia journey—a process that is never easy, but does not have to be experienced alone.
A typical day at work for Heather includes coordinating memory cafes, support groups, and educational programming.
Additionally, Heather was a member of several ADAW Alzheimer’s Walk committees, including:
• The 2019 Grant County Alzheimer’s Walk (which raised more than $27,000)
• The 2019 ADAW Iowa County Alzheimer’s Walk (which raised more than $6000)
• The 2019 ADAW Crawford County Alzheimer’s Walk (which raised more than $10,000)
Whether organizing events, administering programs, or facilitating support groups, Heather is in the field making a difference and supporting the ADAW’s mission every day.
“I look forward each day to making a difference in their lives,” Heather said. “I have the opportunity to make connections, provide support, provide education, and to be an advocate while raising awareness in my communities.”
