The overwhelming show of support for the 2020 virtual Alzheimer’s Walk has given everyone at the ADAW a tremendous boost. Back in June, the ADAW decided to change all the walks to virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is something we’ve never done in the 22 years of having our walks. 2020 has proven to be a year of unprecedented change. In March, our staff pivoted to working from home. Soon after, our organization pivoted yet again to offer our free programs, services and support groups on-line. Staying inside and staying safe has become the “new normal” for us. We understand the disappointment of not meeting in person to enjoy our Memory Cafes, education programs and support groups. One thing remains steady, the ADAW is here for you.
For the 6 past months and due to social isolation, the ADAW call volume has doubled compared to 2019. We have experienced a rise in families in crisis and caregivers needing more support than ever before. We continue to partner with assisted living facilities, in-home care providers and state agencies to keep informed on Wisconsin guidelines for keeping safe.
Amidst all of this change, our thoughts went to all of our friends who look forward to attending our annual walks. Not only are the Alzheimer’s Walk an annual event fundraiser – the largest fundraiser for ADAW – it’s also an opportunity for us to visit with our supporters and listen to wonderful and heartfelt stories from the families and individuals we serve. There are smiles and tears at these walks that impact us greatly. Every year, we are so thankful and amazed by the support we receive from walkers and walk donors in our communities.
This year we were concerned about how we can still connect with our walkers, virtually. Your show of support by sending in your Why I Walk selfies and team photos warmed our hearts. Even though we couldn’t be together in person to walk in your communities, your support was still there. We also received stories from Honorary Chairpersons living the Alzheimer’s and dementia journeys. You answered the ADAW’s call to Walk with Us. We are so incredibly humbled and honored for your continued support of the 2020 virtual walk.
Here is a summary of the 2020 walk donations received and goals.
